Monday, January 30, 2017

Thibodaux: Landry's, 821 Canal Blvd.; Thibodaux, 104 St. Patrick Highway; and Williams and Southall, 115 St. Mary Highway.Randy Anderson, of Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City, Ala., and a board member for the National Funeral Directors Association, said community preferences determine how many funeral homes an area has. Both Alexander City and Thibodaux have a population of about 14,000."We have four funeral homes," Anderson said. "I don't think there's any specific number that you can say you've got this many people and should have this many funeral homes."The new funeral home will be a brick building with an outside patio, large lobby area and a chapel for families to hold services, Ordoyne said. His daughter, Victoria Thomas, is co-owner. Ray Baudoin Builders is the contractor.Ordoyne said his father managed funeral homes for 50 years, and he grew up in the business. He said the location for Ordoyne Funeral Home is ideal."It looks like the majority of people are moving north of Bayou Lafourche," he said. "It's going to give the community another choice."According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the 2013 cremation rate in the United States was 45.4 percent, compared to a 48.7 percent burial rate. Cremation has gained popularity over the years, the report says, with the rate increasing from 32.3 percent in 2005 to 40.4 percent in 2010.At the same time, burial rates have dropped from 61.5 percent in 2005 to 53.3 percent in 2010, the report says. The National Funeral Directors Association expects the cremation rate for this year to be 48.5 percent, surpassing the projected burial rate of 45.6 percent. From 2004 to 2014, the number of funeral homes in the United States has steadily decrea
