Bayou even held a ribbon-cutting to mark its installation on the southern end of the bridge.Carroll was 87 when she was killed in a traffic accident while traveling between Fort Walton Beach and Atmore, Alabama. She had been active at Trinity Methodist until her health began to fail.“When she was able she was involved in something,” Toole said. “Even after, she didn’t slow down going to church.”Carroll was instrumental in the opening of “Our Daily Bread,” a soup kitchen at the church open to all comers. Her name appears in news stories about clothing drives and on lists of donors to the Empty Stocking Fund. Her obituary states she also helped start a “Prayer Shawl” ministry at Trinity, and those who knew her well recall her devotion to the church’s Emmaus ministry and a disciple class created to further study of the Bible.Her husband Jerry survived the accident that killed Carroll. Details of the crash were not immediately available.The obituary lists Carroll as having two daughters, Karen Buckner and Teri Jackson, five grandchildren and 10 grandchildren.Services are slated for 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the church soup kitchen or church youth programs.

They are receiving emotional support from ADOC's Critical Incident Stress Management Team and chaplains.Inmate Cleveland Cunningham stabbed Bettis at the dining hall in Atmore's William C. Holman Correctional Facility on Sept. 1. Prison officials report Cunningham stabbed Bettis in retaliation for being denied an extra tray of food during the afternoon meal.Bettis has been a corrections officer at Holman since 2009. Corrections Commission Jeff Dunn extended the department's condolences to Bettis' family."Officer Bettis was known among his colleagues as a firm, but fair corrections officer, and was highly respected for his work ethic and dedicated service to his profession," Dunn said.Cunningham was charged with attempted murder after he assaulted the officer. That charge will be upgraded to murder, officials said. The inmate was sentenced to 20 years for a 2013 first-degree robbery charge out of Baldwin County.  Along with being a husband and a father of three, Bettis was also a veteran. He served on active duty in Iraq with the Alabama Army National Guard. He has received the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Star. Gov.
