Lawrence J. Hogan Sr., Md. Republican who called for Nixon's impeachment, dies at 88 - Washington Post

Monday, May 01, 2017

He was elected by a 3-to-2 margin over incumbent Winfield M. Kelly Jr.As county executive, Mr. Hogan eliminated more than 3,000 jobs, including those of more than 500 teachers. He slashed the budgets for libraries and schools, and infrastructure spending fell to a bare minimum. From the start, Mr. Hogan had a bitter relationship with the County Council, often battling over political appointments. Once, in a fit of rage, Mr. Hogan threatened to castrate Democratic Council Chairman Parris N. Glendening, who eventually succeeded him. Glendening served as Maryland governor from 1995 to 2003.Mr. Hogan’s strained relations with labor leaders helped precipitate a 1980 strike, in which 1,500 county employees walked off the job for 11 days. Amid the tumult, a prisoners’ riot broke out at the county jail. Mr. Hogan fired 121 jail guards, and the other employees went back to work without a contract.During his four-year term, Mr. Hogan reduced the county’s property tax rate by 20 percent, cut the county’s budget and eliminated 2,400 public employees from the county payroll. He was also credited with improving the county’s low-income housing program and with doubling the number of African American police officers, including naming the first black deputy police chief in Prince George’s.As the only Republican officeholder in a heavily Democratic jurisdiction, Mr. Hogan attributed many his problems as county executive to partisan rancor. The Fraternal Order of Police, which had supported Mr. Hogan’s run for county executive in 1978, turned against him after contract disputes and other quarrels. The leader of the police support group called Mr. Hogan “a little Napoleon.”Mr. Hogan’s final campaign

Father and son killed in head-on crash with each other in a week of inexplicable grief - AL.com

Monday, February 27, 2017

And then, five days later, the unthinkable became the unfathomable.Dennis' own brother Jeff Brasher - a beloved bread deliveryman on the way to Flower's Bakery in Winfield - collided head-on with a pickup truck being driven by none other than his own son - Dennis' nephew Austin. And there, at four in the morning on a Fayette County road 10 miles from their home, the father and son died in the most nightmarish of ways. "It's an unexpected, unbelievable tragedy,'' Dennis told AL.com on Monday. "There's no explanation for something so random."Dennis is not merely trying to understand why. She is trying to figure out how this darkness can be turned to light. "I've got to look for ways to impact others in a positive way," she said. "Someone needs to hug their family member because of this."Jeff Brasher, 50, and his 22-year-old son Austin Brasher, died early Saturday morning in the bizarre Fayette County crash. The collision happened at 4:10 a.m. on Fayette County 49 near Forest Loop Road, about one mile west of Winfield and not anywhere near their home in Bankston. The elder Brasher was driving a 2006 Ford pickup truck, and his son a 2004 Chevrolet pickup, according to troopers. The collision happened when one of the trucks crossed over into the wrong lane.Jeff Brasher was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin Brasher was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he died at 9:18 a.m. Troopers said neither Brasher was wearing a seatbelt. Authorities said alcohol may have playe
