Rep. Joe Neal remembered as an advocate for those less fortunate - Aiken Standard

Monday, March 06, 2017

That’s what I remember most about him (and) just talking to each other," he said. " … It just really has affected me over the past 24 hours."Reps. Bill Hixon, R-North Augusta, and Bill Taylor, R-Aiken, also had fond memories to share about the lawmaker.Hixon, like Clyburn, also mentioned how legislators came together to remember him. A black cloth and flowers adorned his desk Wednesday, legislators shared their sentiments and the House adjourned in his honor.Hixon called it a somber but touching day."It's hard to lose one of 124," he said. "He was a great guy.""It is a sad loss, particularly for his family, and also for the House of Representatives," Taylor said. "For 24 years, he has been a champion of social issues for the underprivileged. He will be sorely missed."Aiken City Council member Gail Diggs remembered Neal as a fighter for the underserved population. "He will be missed by everyone in the Statehouse and all those he fought so hard for," she said.Diggs was in Columbia visiting the Statehouse when the news of Neal's passing was announced."It came as such a shock," she said. "We were in Columbia when they made the announcement, and it just was such a shock to hear the news. He was a person I really admired."Aiken City Council member Lessie Price said Neal was admired by everyone."Rep. Neal was a nice man. He really will be missed. Those strong leaders, their strong voice will be missed," Price said. "He was a voice of reason and worked to bring everybody together." Price also was shocked of the news of Neal's sudden passing."Joe was a personal friend," she said. "He was the one to call out of the blue to see how I was doing. He was always encouraging me to strive for more."Price said Neal spoke with a higher voice with strong, spiritual undertones. "There was a spiritual element in all of this because Joe was a Christian," she said. "He encouraged me to speak without fear for those folks who were underserved and did not have that voice. Joe was a vo
