Downtown Eugene's last funeral home has moved west - The Register-Guard

Monday, September 26, 2016

Musgrove Mortuaries & Cemeteries owns several funeral homes and three cemeteries in Eugene, Springfield, Creswell and Junction City. It manages Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eugene for the Catholic Archdiocese or Portland. The company is owned by brothers Mark and Jeff Musgrove and their respective wives, Diane and Sharon.Jeff Musgrove, 53, said moving Poole-Larsen from downtown was strictly a business decision, similar to the choices that other Eugene businesses have made over the years.“I think about all the businesses that used to be downtown that have relocated, including The Register-Guard, Sears, Skeie’s Jewelers, and all of the auto dealers,” he said. “I just see our move as a part of the evolution of both our business and downtown Eugene.”ConvenienceThe Musgrove family sold the Poole-Larsen property, including a three-story building with a chapel that dates to 1908, in a deal expected to close in mid-October. Terms were not disclosed. The buyer, David Corey, was out of the country, and could not be reached for comment.Families who made burial or cremation arrangements through Poole-Larsen will be served at West Lawn, according to Musgrove Mortuaries & Cemeteries.Mark Musgrove said that West Lawn has plenty of parking and easy access for elderly people, which wasn’t the case at the older buildings occupied by Musgrove Family Mortuary downtown. “We had parking issues and issues with accessibility,” he said.Stairs in front of the buildings caused difficulty for elderly people or those who used wheelchairs. Some people had to use a ramp on the side of the funeral home’s chapel instead of the front door, he said. It’s also more convenient for customers and employees to have funeral homes at West Lawn Cemetery, with its many places for burial and inurnment, Musgrove said. The buildings at West Lawn include a chapel large enough to hold 250 people, with the latest audio visual equipment for music and video tributes.“We can accommodate the family throughout the whole process,” Musgrove said. The Musgrove family also owns Lane Memorial Gardens and Lane Memorial Funeral Home on West 11th Avenue, not far from West Lawn. The consolidation of the downtown operations makes it easier on employees, too, Musgrove said.“We are not running back and forth from downtown. Our preparation center is here, where we do embalming, cremation and preparation of the body. We are centralized here.”Family historyThe Musgrove brothers became involved in the funeral business through their parents, Wayne and Kay Musgrove, who established the family business in 1973.Musgrove Family Mortuary bought a couple of funeral homes after it started, inclu
