David Anthony Gunter, 79, of Imperial died Feb. 7, 2017, at his home. Mr. Gunter was retired from Union Pacific after working there for 39 years. He was a founding member of the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter for 20 years. He also volunteered with the Jefferson County Sherriff’s Office for 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 400 of Fenton, St. John’s Catholic Church in Shady Valley and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was known for his smile, generosity and sense of humor. Born Nov. 28, 1938, he was the son of the late Theodore and Jesse Gunter.He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Betty (Hilgert) Gunter of Imperial; two children: Jennifer (Louie) Solnosky and Amy (Kevin) Nestor; two grandchildren: Christina and Gavin Solnosky; five siblings: Mary Beth (Tom) Mickley, Roger (Diann) Vincent, Douglas (Donna) Vincent, Dorothy (Norman) McCullough and Eugene Gunter; a sister-in-law: Evelyn Gunter; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. SPRINGDALE — Former Wal-Mart executive and Northwest Arkansas business leader Don Soderquist, 82, died Thursday.“Dad passed away today due to complications from heart surgery earlier this week,” Wendy Soderquist Togami, his daughter, wrote in an email. “We are grieving with all of you at this news, and yet with our sad hearts, rejoicing that he is busy with his next assignment in heaven.”She wrote that funeral arrangements would be decided in the coming days.Soderquist spent 22 years with Wal-Mart, starting in 1980 as executive vice president of administration and distribution. He became chief operating officer and vice chairman in 1988, stepping down from those posts in 2000 and officially retiring in 2002.His days after retirement were spent at The Soderquist Center, founded in his honor by John Brown University in Siloam Springs in 1998. Friends and fellow firefighters delivered heartfelt eulogies for their fallen comrade.West Chester Fire Chief Rick Prinz has known Burns for nearly 40 years and spoke about their life-long friendship. The two began in the fire service together.
