After high school, he attended Murray State University and later Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where his basketball career included an appearance in the NCAA basketball tournament. Over the years, and following service in the Texas National Guard, he lived in Dallas and San Antonio, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Nashville and Lexington, Tennessee; and Murray. He enjoyed successful work as a high school teacher, basketball coach, salesman and, finally, as a financial advisor for Edward Jones in Lexington and Huntington, Tennessee.  Tom was blessed with a wide circle of friends with whom he enjoyed duck hunting, golf, fishing, tall tales and the occasional cigar and fine wine.
