Florence funeral home director interested in Allen's open seat - Burlington County Times

Monday, February 06, 2017

A long shot to unseat Allen in 2007, Dennison faces similar odds in winning the Democratic nomination for the seat this year as both of the district's Democratic Assembly members — Herb Conaway and Troy Singleton — have expressed interest in running.Conaway is the more senior of the two, but Singleton has been the more prolific fundraiser and has strong ties to some key trade unions.New Jersey Building and Construction Trades Council President William Mullen and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 have endorsed Singleton's potential candidacy.Mount Laurel Democrat Carol Murphy, who is director of policy and communications for Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera, D-4th of Gloucester Township, is believed to be interested in running for the Assembly if either Conaway or Singleton runs for Senate.Dennison said he would not rule out running for one of the two Assembly seats if that is the preference of the Burlington County Democratic Committee. But he stressed that he believes he's a viable Senate candidate."Personally, I like Herb and Troy. … However, I think neither are who I am," he said Thursday, adding that his chief concern was that Burlington County's Democratic organization decides on a preferred candidate without undue influence from leaders like Senate President Stephen Sweeney and George Norcross, the influential chairman of Cooper University Hospital in Camden.Norcross has not issued an endorsement. But his younger brother, U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross, has endorsed Singleton, as has his longtime friend and ally Sweeney."I know how the party system works, and I intend to work within it. What doesn't work with me is another county's boss telling me what to do," Dennison said. "If this chair listens to him, then we have a problem."Burlington County Democratic Chairman Joe Andl has yet to comment on the upcoming 7th District race or any plans for the party to hold a convention to endorse a preferred candidate. The county party's endorsement is considered key in any contested primary because it gives the preferred candidate the so-called "county line" ballot position with other endorsed Democrats, including the party's pick for governor.Several Democrats have announced their candidacy for governor, including former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Phil Murphy, Assemblyman John Wisniewski and state Sen. Ray Lesniak.Among the field, Murphy is believed ...
