Cascade Boulevard in Tigard to Times Square overlooking the I-5/217 interchange to the old former bowling alley next door to the Burlingame Fred Meyer to (finally) the big building on Lake Road.Through all of that, Mary struggled to provide top-notch service to grieving survivors with their obits, as well as all the other customers trying to get their news into the paper. She kept up that struggle as she grappled with constantly evolving computer systems, email and other technical programs. And, let’s face it, she didn’t really understand any of it. She didn’t know email from eBay. But she did know how to write up those dumb little stories that most so-called reporters didn’t know how (or like) to do. And I’m positive that she single-handedly kept a good share of our papers’ longtime readers from abandoning us like rats from a ship.Of course, the world we live in today is way different than the one Mary and I (and Louise) used to drive to work in every day. The Sellwood Bridge, after about 20 years of rebuilding, is almost finished. If we were still sharing a ride, I guess we’d no longer be praying that it doesn’t fall down.Mikel Kelly is a retired newspaper editor who spends most of his time now goofing off with the other person who lives at his house and occasionally writing things like this.
