PAGE COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — U.S. Marshal Patrick Carothers, 53, was a graduate of Luray High School's Class of 1982. On Tuesday, Nov. 29, he'll be buried in Page County. He was killed in the line of duty.U.S. Marshals Service badge, Luray HS emblem - composite by WHSVThe longtime U.S. Marshals Service veteran was deputy commander of the service's Southeast Regional Task Force, according to a Page United Methodist Church obituary.He lived in Macon, Georgia. He was serving a warrant in Long County, Georgia on Nov. 18 on a fugitive "wanted for attempted murder of police officers" among other charges, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In the process, the fugitive, Dontrell Montese Carter, shot Carothers twice. Other marshals returned fire and struck the fugitive. The two were transported to different hospitals where they were pronounced dead. Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund, P. O. Box 11730, Bozeman, MT 59719, or online at usmarshalsfund.org.Carothers was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service and had been deputy commander of the agency's Southeast Regional task Force for about a year.
