Welch Funeral Home celebrates their 50th anniversary. Their Haynesville location opened in 2001, with the addition of a crematory to serve Northern Neck families.“I wanted to make something of myself and I just persevered, that’s all,” said John Welch II as he looked back on the early years of the Welch Funeral Home. In 1966, Welch II opened the first funeral home in Montross, Va. after a long family history of business. Today, 50 years later, his son Paul Welch is the principal business manager and owes it all to the Welch men before him.In 1903, Welch’s great grandfather purchased a general store in Downings, Va. He subsequently started canning tomatoes, like many other Northern Neck families. This continued through the Welch family until 1969. Including the funeral homes, the Welch family has been in family business for over 100 years.“It wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the struggles that dad went through in the past,” said Welch.
