He was a 1957 graduate of Lebanon High School and attended Cumberland University. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and retired from IBM with thirty-seven years of service. He was a member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge # 98 F & AM and The Knights Templar.He was preceded in death by a wife, Coyalene McPeak Laine; five sisters: Iva Dell McMinn, Frances VanHook, Dorothy Locke, Martha Bell, Linda Yarbrough; two brothers: Ralph and David Laine. He is a native of Cumberland, Maryland and a graduate of Alleghany High School where he was well-known as “Buckshot”. As a young man, he worked with his father as a carpenter, which later established his hobby in designing beautiful objects of wood. John served in the U.S. Army during the police action in Korea with the 45th Infantry. He obtained his B.S. degree in Building Construction from Virginia Tech in 1957 through his G.I. Bill. John worked with Graves Construction; T.C. Britton; Creative Construction; and J.H. Fralin & Son in the Roanoke area as well as various parts of North Carolina and Virginia. He built several tower installations for the C & P Telephone Company, as well as schools and business buildings in and around the Roanoke area. He is a Master Mason of the East Gate Lodge 216 AF & AM based in Cumberland, Maryland. He was also a member of The Scottish Rite Valley of Cumberland and The Kazim Temple of Richmond. John was an avid hunter, fisherman, shooter, and conservationist. John Clayton Sanders, 98, of Decatur, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at his home.He was a member of Elk Creek Baptist Church in Cumberland City. He was a former Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and a life member of VFW of Harriman Post 6598. He served in World War II from 1941 to 1945 and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, six Battle Stars, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.John was a son of the late Harold C. and Dora Williamson Sanders. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Olene Sanders; two brothers, Charles W. Sanders and Clarence Boyce Sanders; one sister, Dora Dean McCart; and one grandchild, Sherry Sanders.Survivors include his sons, Harold A. Sanders of Cumberland City, Charles A.
