Monday, October 31, 2016Center Street this morning.Editor's note: This is a 6:15 p.m. update of a story that was posted at 8:19 this morning.By HOLLY ANGELOand GEORGE GRAHAMStaff writersCHICOPEE - The aftermath of Friday's fatal tanker truck accident on Interstate 91 continued today when a Chicopee woman suffered critical injuries after slamming her car into a large trash container that was placed on the shoulder of Center Street as part of the accident cleanup.Chicopee police would not release the identity of the victim. She was rushed to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the 4:30 a.m. crash.The woman was traveling south on Center Street when she hit a Dumpster, according to police Capt. William R. Jebb. The area of Center Street near Springfield had reopened following Friday's accident, but was closed again today following the latest crash.Aaron J. Staelens, 43, of Richmond, N.H., died 10 hours after his tanker, carrying 10,600 gallons of fuel, hit a guardrail and sign post when another driver crossed in front of him on I-91 north Friday morning. The impact ignited the tanker and the trailer separated from the tractor and rolled down an embankment, landing 100 feet off Center Street.Staelens was trapped inside his cab on I-91, but finally free...
Monday, October 10, 2016She lived in Middlebury over 20 years where she was a parishioner of St. John of the Cross Church, and she also lived in Brookfield and Woodbury. She graduated from Our Lady of Elms College in Chicopee, MA and before retiring, she worked as a microbiologist at Waterbury Hospital for over 30 years. Bernadette’s laboratory work on meningitis has been cited in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. Bernadette is survived by her son, Stephen Wilkinson and his wife Debbie of Danbury, CT; her step-grand daughter, Allison Kirby; her nephew, Arthur G. Roberts and his wife Janet of Hilo, HI; her step-son, Andrew Pye, his wife Beth and their sons, RJ and Andrew Pye of Chester, CT and her beloved cat Felix. In addition to her parents and her husband, Bernadette was predeceased by her long-time companion, Richard Pye, her brothers, Bernard, Paul and Charles and her sisters, Pauline, Lucille and Sylvia.All services are private and there are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rose Hope Animal Refuge, 201 Union Street, Waterbury, CT 06706.
Sunday, June 19, 2016An officer looked inside and found an unresponsive man later identified as O’Connell. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.Shawn O’Connell is survived by his brother David O’Connell of Chicopee, Massachusetts; sister Laurie O’Connell of Wilmington, Delaware; sister Cindy LaFortune, her husband Mark LaFortune and their three children of Mohall, North Dakota; sister Debi O’Connell and her two children of San Bernardino; and Kelly O’Connell and her wife Bantley of Dudley, Massachusetts.
