Amherst mourns loss of police officer - The Union Leader

Monday, March 27, 2017

AMHERST — The community is mourning the passing of a local police officer. Nathan Berry, a senior patrolman with the Amherst Police Department, died unexpectedly at his Hopkinton residence on Sunday. “Officer Berry was a talented and dedicated public servant who was well respected by his peers,” said a statement from Amherst police. Berry, 42, served as the supervisor of the agency’s motorcycle unit, and volunteered his time with the New Hampshire Police Cadet Training Academy, according to the statement. “Nathan will be remembered for his kindheartedness, outgoing personality and sense of humor,” states his obituary. During his time with the Amherst Police Department, Berry was one of several police officers who was recognized during the 2011 New Hampshire Congressional Law Enforcement award ceremony for his work in helping to apprehend Steven Spader and Christopher Gribble for their roles in the 2009 murder of Kimberly Cates and the attack on her daughter, Jaimie Cates, at their Mont Vernon residence.Berry not only responded to the murder scene that night, but also investigated a suspicious parked vehicle occupied by Spader and Gribble a short time...

St. Joseph's Church to host Christmas bazaar | Chariho Times ... - Ricentral.com

Monday, November 28, 2016

HOPKINTON – Christmas is sneaking up on us and for me, and so many others, the kick-off to the holiday season begins with the big bazaar at St. Joseph’s Church in Hope Valley. We’re up early to get to the church, located at 1105 Main St., to be served a delicious breakfast. Two menus are offered throughout the day; breakfast choices include pancakes, sausage, home fries, scrambled eggs, coffee, tea, juice and hot chocolate. Lunch can be had in the form of home-made soup, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, meatball grinders, and cold soda or a warm drink. Meals are served at long beautifully decorated tables where you are soon joined by friends old and new.Throughout the day, kids can retreat to the back of the large room to make Christmas crafts, assisted by several teens who volunteer their help in making ornaments, magnets and other keepsakes of the day. Our tree holds several years’ worth of these sentimental treasures. At this annual event, my kids have enjoyed sitting down on the...

Charles Wright remembered fondly by Sullivan - Ricentral.com

Monday, September 05, 2016

HOPKINTON – A few months ago I found myself at Avery’s Funeral Home in Hope Valley paying respects to a woman I’d never met. My reason for being there was the deep love in my heart for a man I’d never met. “I lost my little girl,” he’d said to me over the phone from Florida. His long-time companion was to be buried in Hope Valley and his health prevented him from being able to travel to Rhode Island. And so I attended the funeral of Paula Verry and left her a bouquet of roses “from Charlie”.Charles Wright had been a close friend of my grandfather when I was younger. I’d never met him but my grandfather consulted him often concerning research I was doing, and reported back to me. Our land had been an old Watson family farm and I was researching its past owners. Charlie was the son of Virginia (Watson) Wright, who was a grand-daughter of the man who once farmed our land.Decades passed, I lost my beloved grandfather and life moved on. Then, one day about three years ago, I received an e-m...
