Monday, June 26, 2017Mr. Stanley L. Newton, age 63 years, of Lawrence, Kansas, a former Jefferson City resident passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 in Orlando, FL.Stan was born February 23, 1954 in West Plains, MO. a son of Delbert Eugene “Gene” and Maggie Belle (Smith) Newton. He was married on March 3, 1972 in Springfield, MO. to Sara Strong and from this marriage his two children were born, Aaron and Courtney. Sara and he remained friends to this day. He was a 1972 graduate of Jefferson City High School and had many lifelong friends through his class. Stan was employed in the energy sector his entire professional career, which spanned over 40 years. He was currently employed as a Senior Originator with Westar Energy, based out of Topeka, Kansas, but he traveled the country working with clients. Before his career with Westar, he had worked with Missouri Power and Light (while living in Jefferson City and Moberly), Associated Electric (while living in Springfield), and Cargill (while living in Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota). Monday, June 26, 2017Merle Leon Hughes, 90, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017 at his residence. Born December 23, 1926 in Lawrenceville, IL to the late Hubert and Daisy Enyart Hughes, Merle was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Army. He is also a retired maintenance technician. Left to cherish Merle's memory are his sons, Richard and wife Laura Hughes of Clinton and Keith Hughes of Lampe. MO; siblings Mary Scott, Melvin Hughes, Shirley Burggett of Lawrenceville, IL., Morris Hughes of Courtland, IL.; grandchildren Brian, Karen, Jennifer, Brent Hughes, Kali Poss; 11 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, family and other friends.Merle is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and siblings Mildred Bunyan, Curtis Hughes, Merrill Hughes, and Marvin Hughes.
