Forgiveness to New Life Walk to benefit Glover Grove starts Sunday - Aiken Standard

Byrne will start at Marion Square near Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston after a prayer service. His trek will end Nov. 20 at Glover Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenville.The route will take Byrne through North Charleston, Jedburg, St. George, Branchville, Denmark, Elko and Montmorenci.Byrne will have a support team, and other walkers are expected to join him at various times during the trip.“This is a way to respond to the love of God by serving the community,” Byrne said.The walk is a fundraiser for Glover Grove, which was destroyed by fire in June 2015.Even though the church has been rebuilt, using money from insurance and the Glover Grove Phoenix Fun, not all of the $500,000 construction project’s cost have been covered yet.“The second and maybe more important reason long-term for doing this walk is to raise awareness that we are all brothers and sisters in the eyes of God,” Byrne said. “We need to work to remove any barriers to that.”Glover Grove burned down not long after nine African-Americans died in a mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church.During a bond hearing for the accused gunman, Dylann Roof, who is white, relatives of the Emanuel AME victims offered him forgiveness.“I was so moved by that,” Byrne said.Glover Grove has a predominantly black congregation.“The of...
