Myers’ artwork and family pieces. Avripas, a designer and owner of Myers and Avripas Design, pointed out some of his favorites. On a trip to Greece, Myers picked an olive branch. When they returned home, Myers crafted the branch into a wreath. It is framed and hangs in a guest bedroom. A picture of Jesus, displayed in the upstairs hallway, was an award given to Avripas’ grandfather for perfect attendance in Sunday school. He also pointed out a couple of favorites in the kitchen. Two dolls, that stand in a kitchen window, are made from lamp stands, old tins and part of dolls. One of his favorites is a portrait sculpture of Avripas, Myers and their cat by Karen Linduska.Avripas also renovated two houses on the east side of Park Avenue and the Professional Building downtown. One of the houses was a brick house built by Albert Storme, owner of Storme Funeral Home.“It is an awesome, awesome house,” Avripas said.He added that the house is huge and has five bedrooms and four bathrooms on three levels. The support beams came from a bridge and the house is “built like a fort.” Avripas’ niece and nephew and their children live in the house. He also renovated the house to the south of the Storme home.Avripas owns the professional building across from Herrin City Library, which has 10 office suites. He said the building is very “Floridian.” He saw the color on a building in Florida.“Then, I was on a trip to Russia and a museum was that color,” Avripas said.Gordon Pruett of Herrin Area Historical Society would like to see efforts like those of Avripas and Myers from other owners of historic buildings.“We hope that the owners of the buildings that are historic take pride in their ownership and take care of those buildings,” Pruett said.He said some non-traditional, even guerilla, tactics may be necessary to save some of those buildings from the wrecking ball. For example, the Trovillion house, Thatchcot, needs something like a go-fund me account. For Lively, two of the goals are to give visitors to Herrin the impression that people in Herrin really take care of and care for their hometown and to get people walking and shopping downtown again.
