Goodbye, Cather-Pound: Regents approve plan to demolish old ... - Omaha World-Herald

Monday, November 21, 2016

Pound, said there’s little question that she’ll recall Pound fondly.“I’ve really come to love it in the three years that I’ve been there,” said Wurtele, of Nebraska City. She likes the old-style touches: the wall-attached study desk in her room, student-made murals on the walls facing the elevator on each floor, and the pay phone on the first floor, below the dining hall.“I’ve never heard it ring,” she said of the phone, “but it’s there.”Jerry Wintz of Hartington, Nebraska, compiled his memories at Cather Hall from 1979 to 1981. He dislocated a kneecap while wrestling a buddy in Cather. The young men on his floor formed intramural football and basketball teams. Not surprisingly, there was some beer consumption as well.“We met a lot of good guys there in that hall,” said Wintz, who oversees Wintz Funeral Home in his hometown. “We had our fun. ... I have good memories of being down there.”Wintz eventually left UNL for Wayne State College. Then he continued on to mortuary science school in Cincinnati to join his father and brother in the family business. He has returned to Cather at least once, when his son checked out UNL.Pound now has numerous international students in it because it’s one of the residence halls that stays open over holiday breaks.“I don’t know why they’re closing it,” said Eric Nshimyumuremyi, a freshman agriculture student from Rwanda. “For me, it’s perfect.”Cather closed in 2014, about the time two new residence halls nearby — Eastside Suites and University Suites — opened. Smith said those two residence halls will help meet the demand that Cather and Pound once satisfied.Smith said more private apartment buildings near UNL have gone up over the past few years as well, easing some of that demand.A new dining hall near Pound and Cather, the 17th Street Dining Complex, will open in 2017.On East Campus, a 375-bed residence hall will replace two older dorms that will close: Burr and Fedde Halls.Even with projected enrollment growth, Smith said, the new housing should be adequate for the near future, at least.UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green said Friday that no decision has been made on what to do with the 17th Street space when Pound, Cather and the dining hall are demolished.Wurtele thinks about all of the students who have come before her. They pulled all-nighters in the study room on the first floor and painted the murals on each floor.“I’ve really become attached to Pound,” she said.In ...
