Joe Cervino, a longtime baseball coach and athletic director at Teaneck High School, died Tuesday at Holy Name Hospital, according to NorthJersey.com. He was 93 years old.Cervino, who lived in New Milford, began his career at Teaneck in 1949 and spent his early years as the head football coach before switching to head the baseball program, which he led for 22 seasons. His coaching legacy included 384 wins and three sectional titles.The Haddon Heights native also spent more than two decades as the Teaneck athletic director and was the co-founder of the Bergen County baseball tournament, which began in 1959. To this day, the tournament's winning coach receives an award named in Cervino's honor.In his early years, Cervino went to Gettysburg College to play football and baseball, but had his collegiate career interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he served as a sergeant in the Army, took part in the invasion of Normandy and earned a Purple Heart. Affectionately known as"'Chub" and "Pop-pop," he was born on November 4, 1928 in Teaneck, NJ. As a young man Harold was an All-State Basketball player at Fort Lee High School, leading his team to win the 1946 State Championship. Harold proudly served his country in the US Navy, owned and operated Continental Alarm Co. in Bergenfield. He served as past president and was named man of the year for the Fort Lee Chamber of Commerce. Harold was extremely proud to be the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 139 in Bergenfield. He loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter and looked forward to his trips to Maine every fall. He found purpose in doing small deeds for others that brought much joy to their lives. He will truly be missed.Harold is predeceased by his wife Irene Groshon and daughter Sharon O'Leary.
