Fort Plain mayor, Guy Barton, dies - WRGB

FORT PLAIN -- Services will be held for Mayor Guy J. Barton of Fort Plain on Tuesday, July 5, at 6 p.m., at the Harry Hoag Gymnasium.Barton's obituary with the Gray-Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home reports that he died Friday in Cooperstown, following a brief illness.Barton, 69, was a lifelong resident of Fort Plain and had been serving as its mayor for 11 years at the time of his death. He had previously served as a village trustee and a town councilman, and drove a school bus for more than 40 years. He served in the Army Reserves from 1965-1978, according to his obituary.He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Cooperstown Chamber.Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department honored Barton on its Facebook page as a 50-year member and former department president. The department will escort Barton to his final resting place in Fort Plain Cemetery.Family will receive relatives and friends before the memorial service, from 4-6 p.m. at the Harry Hoag Gymnasium.
