Washington death-row inmate dies of cardiac arrest - The Seattle Times

Monday, January 09, 2017

Jay Inslee in 2014 announced a moratorium on state executions, saying the way the death penalty is applied is too flawed to let more go forward.Inslee last week signed a reprieve for Clark Richard Elmore, who had been convicted of raping and killing his girlfriend’s 14-year-old daughter, Kristy Ohnstad, in Bellingham in 1995. Elmore will remain in prison for life. With his legal appeals exhausted, Elmore’s execution had been scheduled for Jan. 19.Despite Inslee’s moratorium, executions are still part of state law, so any reprieves require that Inslee exercise his authority as governor. No execution date had been set for Woods.

Hillary Clinton had it right: It takes a village - Toledo Blade

Monday, December 12, 2016

Wyandot County towns such as McCutchenville (aka “Skutch”), Melmore, Belle Vernon, and a personal favorite, the quaintly named Deunquat. There’s artwork featuring the town’s connection to Great Lakes shipping and paying tribute to local men who died aboard the ill-fated lake freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975, including my uncle, Ralph Walton, who once called Sycamore home.Keeping all these memories alive is the museum’s director, Kim Mohr. He opens the place for regular hours only on Saturday, but he will drop what he’s doing on other days to unlock the museum and provide a personal tour to those who ask.Mr. Mohr lives in an apartment upstairs at the local funeral home, which is run by a funeral director named Steve Walton, the village’s former mayor and a relative of mine. Some might consider that sort of living arrangement unusual, but Mr. Mohr likes it. At least it’s quiet. The funeral director’s only request of his tenant? Don’t make popcorn during a funeral.Mr. Mohr’s affection for Sycamore included suiting up with the village’s old timers baseball team, the Sycamore Grasshoppers. You know, the guys with the handlebar moustaches?Everybody on the team had a nickname, and nobody could choose for himself what he wanted to be called. His teammates called him “Big Poison,” perhaps because he also served as the umpire.I share this not to brag about my little hometown but to brag about all little hometowns, perhaps including yours. Most of us can wax nostalgically about where we grew up, whether it was a closely knit neighborhood in a big city or a small village like Sycamore. It’s a place where I feel at home. There was a time when it seemed half the Sycamore telephone book was the “W” listings, and most of those were Waltons. It’s easy for people of my generation to remember with fondness the peaceful pace and security of our childhoods. It is no cliche that we never had to lock our doors. If I were to misbehave at a neighbor’s house, my mom would hear about it, and soon enough so would I. Today we’d call it child abuse; then it was called discipline. In the summer I could play baseball at the school with my friends until dark, and nobody, least of all me, feared for my safety. We didn’t have a police department and didn’t need one. Everybody was in Block Watch long before it had a name.If a true emergency developed (and I don’t recall one), the sheriff was just a phone call awa...
