Major Daniel Kimmel Carnes, 69, when he passed the morning of New Year’s Eve 2016.Dan was born Sept. 1, 1947, to George William and Ruth Carnes in Ligonier, PA. He graduated from Grove City College with a B.A. in Psychology. Later he attended the University of Northern Colorado and earned his M.B.A. in Guidance and Counseling. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for 20 years from 1969 to 1989; he was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in 1986. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Dan continued to work in Rapid City until his final retirement in 2016.Dan along with Veronica Carnes raised three children. He and his family lived in Chapel Valley for close to 30 years. Dan enjoyed camping, fishing, skiing, and running in the Black Hills. He dedicated his time to coaching various sports for his children. He was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he met his future wife, Karen Ham. Dan and Karen were married March 5, 2016. GROVE CITY, Pa. — John Edward “Ed” Fisher of Grove City, Pa., passed on to his eternal home Tuesday morning, July 19, 2016, while under hospice care at Grove City Medical Center. Mr. Fisher was 93 years old.Ed was born in Walhonding, Ohio, to Clarence and Mary Fisher in 1922. He resided in Ohio until the outbreak of World War II at which time he entered into military service. He served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant in the anti-tank unit with the 16th regiment of the 1st Division. His service included battles and campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, the invasion at Normandy, Central Europe and the “Battle of the Bulge.” He received seven Bronze stars and was also presented with the “Jubilee of Liberty” medal from the government of France for his participation in the landing at Omaha Beach on D Day.Following his military service, Ed married Violette “Vi” Swatik on Jan. 31, 1948, in Mount Vernon.
