Beth Burger The Columbus Dispatch @abburgerThe first woman to be head of state of the Republic of Liberia was laid to rest Saturday in Reynoldsburg.Ruth Sando Fahnbulleh-Perry, who was born in the rural northwest of the West African nation, died Jan. 8 in a Columbus home after a lengthy illness. She was 77.Fahnbulleh-Perry's photos show a caring, grandmotherly woman. For the funeral visitation, her body was dressed in a vibrant green headwrap and the bright colors she was known for.Family members placed a small mirror and a deck of playing cards in the casket — two items she always kept at her side later in life.Many mourners wore black with colorful green scarves at her funeral in the packed sanctuary of Trinity Episcopal Church Downtown. Republic of Liberia Vice President Joseph Boakai and the country's Minister of Labor, Neto Lighe, were among those in attendance.During the funeral, family members took turns standing watch over the casket, which was later draped in her nation's flag as it was carried from the church.Fahnbulleh-Perry was in central Ohio because she had moved in 2009 to be closer to two of her seven...

On June 11, 1999, he married Elaine Baker Hand, who survives.Also surviving are three sisters, Martha Swisher and Carolyn (Robert) Holland of Cheshire and Sandra Mulford of Reynoldsburg; a son, Wendell (Mary Jane) Mulford of Madeira; a daughter, Molly (Blake) Beardsley of Powell; two step-daughters, Beth (David) Milam of Circleville and Mary (Jaime) Dick of Plain City; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Wendell and Robert; and a sister, Vivian Grant.Following graduation from Cheshire High School in 1949, Galen enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Tarawa (CVA-40). He received his bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees from Ohio University.He spent the majority of his career in the Chillicothe City School system, where he served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent. He was particularly proud of his service as the first principal of Duncan McArthur Elementary School from 1961 to 1971. He retired due to disability in 1979.Galen was a long-time member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he served in various capacities, including Deacon. She was arraigned Saturday in Franklin County Municipal Court and jailed, pending her release on bond.Authorities say the 43-year-old Conley was baby-sitting eight toddlers and infants at her Reynoldsburg, Ohio, home when she found Haddix Mulkey unresponsive May 13. He died at a Columbus hospital.Police say the charges were delayed until toxicology tests confirmed the baby received a fatal dose of the over-the-counter allergy drug. A police report from the Reyonldsburg Division of Police says the medicine was administered in attempts to put the child to sleep.An online obituary for Haddix says he has two older siblings.
