Carney, 59 of Gahanna, passed away on February 17, 2017. He was born on September 23, 1957 to the late John F. and Catherine Mary (Augustine) Carney in Youngstown, OH. John worked many years at ABB, Westerville, OH, he was active with the American Red Cross, Ham Radio (WB8YIJ), and Ski Patrol at Clear Fork, Butler, OH. John is survived by wife of 29 years Sue (Steiner) Carney; children John Richard (Tesslynn) and James Patrick Carney; grandson Caliber Michael Gamgee Carney; siblings Karen Namesnik, Thomas (Carol) Carney, Diane (Terry) Black, and Debra (Scott) Kowal. Friends may call at Newcomer Funeral Home, NE Chapel, 3047 E. Dublin Granville Rd., Columbus on Wednesday, February 22, from 5pm to 8pm and on Thursday, February 23, from 5pm to 8pm. Westerville lost one of its most celebrated residents as World War II veteran and Congressional Gold Medal recipient Bob Arn died Sunday, Aug. 28, at the age of 93.Arn's biggest claim to fame was flying with the Civilian Air Patrol in the 1940s. The CAP was a civilian department charged with scouring the Gulf of Mexico from the sky in an attempt to find German submarines approaching the coast.Arn eventually joined the U.S. Army Air Forces, where he mainly flew transports in a key area of the Himalayan Mountains.For his accomplishments, Arn was celebrated locally and nationally. He served as grand marshal of the Westerville July Fourth parade and was recognized with a special proclamation by Westerville City Council, and was honored with other Ohio recipients when he received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2014.
