Monday, March 06, 2017Monday.He was 65.A memorial service will be held at a later date, family members said. Mark Griffith Westwood Funeral Home handled arrangements.Cooper, at the time a Sapulpa firefighter, opened his original Billy Ray’s in 1984 at 3524 Southwest Blvd.It become a favorite dining spot among local residents and Route 66 travelers, who would catch the aroma of meats smoking in the big pit before they actually saw the restaurant.Cooper and his wife, Sherry, operated other restaurants across the area over the years. Currently there are two Billy Ray’s locations — the original and one in Broken Arrow. The Broken Arrow restaurant, now 6 years old, is run by Cooper’s daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tyler Roberts, and employs four other family members.“Nothing will change” at either restaurant, Tyler Roberts said. “We just want to carry on Billy Ray’s legacy.Born and raised in west Tulsa, Cooper was a graduate of Webster High School, where he played basketball. From there, he served in the Army, and would hold various jobs before becoming a firefighter. It was during a stint as a truck driver, Cooper said, that he first thought about opening a place to eat. He had a favorite restaurant and bar that he stopped at while on the road.“I thought, ‘Man, that’s what I want someday.’ “Later “it was my grandmother’s recipe that led me to barbecue,” he said.Cooper’s survivors include his wife, Sherry Cooper; four children, Doug Cooper, Melissa High, Cindy Turner and Teresa Roberts; nine grandchildren; his mother, Billie Cooper; nephew, Tony Cooper; and a brother, Don Cooper.Tim Stanley918-581-8385tim.stanley@tulsaworld.comTwitter: @timstanleyTW...
