MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Older members of Berkeley County’s Veterans Combined Honor Guard who participated in military funerals for years are fading away.The guard’s remaining six to eight participants continue to conduct military services on Memorial Day and Veterans Day at Martinsburg’s War Memorial Park, but no longer presents military honors at veterans’ funerals, according to Kenneth Yeakley.“We were doing 80 to 90 funerals and special events a year,” said Yeakley, 74. “Some of the guys are getting pretty old, (which) makes it hard.”Michelle “Shelly” Schoppert is administrative coordinator at Brown’s Funeral Home in Martinsburg. She said Yeakley shows up in his uniform with a bugle to play taps at cemeteries whenever a veteran is buried.“Kenny stands off to the side, and if no one is there to play taps, he plays it. Veverka, Ruth Tonry Age 98 Ruth Tonry Veverka passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016. She was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on June 24, 1918. She was the daughter of James Charles and May Elizabeth Tonry. Ruth received her B. S. Degree in Home Economics from West Virginia University in1940, a M.S. Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1950, and completed post-graduate work in Library Science at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1970. Ruth enlisted in the US Navy in Richmond, VA on September 9, 1942, and was accepted into the first class of Midshipmen WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). She was commissioned ensign January 8, 1943, after completing officers training at Smith College, Northhampton, MA. Ruth was assigned to Washington, D.C. to Navy Dept. OP-20-G during World War II and later to the Naval Communcations Annex. In July 1945 Ruth was transferred to Port Blakely, WA on Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound to the USN Radio Supplementary Station. She was released on points Jan 6, 1946 as a lieutenant. Veverka, Ruth Tonry Age 98 Ruth Tonry Veverka passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016. She was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on June 24, 1918.
