Monday, June 26, 2017St. Francis School where she worked as the secretary for 18 years.Barb was a former member of the Naugatuck Council of Catholic Women and a former volunteer for the Peter J. Foley Little League. A loving sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Barb will be most remembered for her kind heart and endless love for her friends and family.She is survived by her son, David Engle; her daughter, Lynn E. Raczkowski and her husband, Brian, of Branford; her beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Eric and Erin Engle of FL, Matthew Almeida of CO and Laura Almeida of CT; three great grandchildren, Jackson, Logan and Carter; and her brother, Howard Thurston and his wife, Janet, of Naugatuck, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Engle, her son, Douglas Engle and her brother, James F. Thurston, Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 23, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT. Those attending are kindly asked to please meet at church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 on Thursday, June 22, at Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck, CT. After the ride, which takes about two hours, motorcyclists will meet at Holy Family Church at 29 Sugar Loaf St. for rally featuring barbecue and raffles, he said.

Surviving children are Dennis (Mary Ann) Newman of Forestdale, David (Diane) of VT, Susan (Ed) Foley of ME, and Judith (Mark) McDonnell of Forestdale. She also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren 2 great-great grandchildren.Doris was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, one of 8 children of German parents, John & Myrtle Nicklaus. As a young adult, she came to Cape Cod and worked at Otis AFB as a translator at the POW camp. She met and married her husband William, and settled in Forestdale. While raising their children, they owned and operated a home improvement business and later, Cape Cod Archery.Doris will be remembered for her homemaking skills, especially her Christmas cookies, porcelain dolls, dollhouses, and needle work of many types. She cherished her family, faith, and friends. She will be dearly missed.Friends and relatives are invited to the visitation and service on Tues. Feb. 7th at Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home, Sandwich.
