Millbrook Village group disbands; bridge to be relocated - New Jersey Herald

Gap National Recreation Area, the bridge is destined to be sold or given away to an owner who had "just the right spot for it."And, feelings over the bridge and an unfinished barn restoration at Millbrook Village have caused a rift that led a small group of volunteers, who called themselves the Friday Work Crew, to disband the group, which traces its founding to the 1970s.In an "obituary" written by Thomas Horsfield, one of the crew members, he said, "It is with great sadness that we report the passing" of the work crew "who have worked tirelessly thru snow and cold, rain and heat."The work crew was down to a half-dozen mostly retired male members of the Millbrook Village Society.While the work crew has disbanded, the society continues volunteering with the National Park Service to help organize and staff the events at the village, said society Vice President Fred Schoffer."We don't like negativity," he said, "and this ‘passing' doesn't mean any criticism."Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Superintendent John Donahue said the National Park Service owns Millbrook Village and, as such, "volunteers' role is to support the goals of the organization."Millbrook Village is a collection of buildings, some original to the site -- some historic to the area and moved to Millbrook and some reconstructions of the type of building common in the Delaware River Valley of the mid- to late-1800s.
