Monday, June 26, 2017Kim and Oscar Smith, Sharon and Lee Linkous, Jack Clifton and many others. Shari graduated from Montgomery High School in Montgomery, WV in 1968. She worked as a Treasurer’s Clerk for Roanoke County for many years as well as in the ticket office of the Salem Civic Center. Some of Shari’s favorite pastimes were quilting, spending time at Smith Mountain Lake, eating her Moose Track ice cream, and going to Mac And Bob’s every chance she could. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m until 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Sherwood Memorial Park’s Abbey. A graveside service to immediately follow. The family would like to extend a special thanks to John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home for their service during the family’s time of need. Fintel, 92, retired President of Roanoke College, passed from this life into the Lord’s keeping on Friday, April 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.He was born on Wednesday, January 21, 1925, to Nora and Ernst Fintel in California. Norm grew up on a farm near Deshler in southern Nebraska and his life was formed deeply in a strong German Lutheran tradition that called him to a life of service.He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanette (Jo) Kosbau Fintel, who was the light of his life and a lifetime partner in all their adventures. He is also survived by their children, Peggy Fintel Horn and her husband, Doug, Barbara Fintel Collins and her husband, Greg, and William Fintel and his wife, Connie; as well as 9 grandchildren, Julie Fintel Stokes, Leslie Horn Clark, Andrew Fintel, Stephen Fintel, Robert Horn, Michael Fintel, Nora Collins, David Fintel and Jeanette Collins; and 6 great-grandchildren. Saturday, April 08, 2017B.S. degree in Building Construction from Virginia Tech in 1957 through his G.I. Bill. John worked with Graves Construction; T.C. Britton; Creative Construction; and J.H. Fralin & Son in the Roanoke area as well as various parts of North Carolina and Virginia. He built several tower installations for the C & P Telephone Company, as well as schools and business buildings in and around the Roanoke area. He is a Master Mason of the East Gate Lodge 216 AF & AM based in Cumberland, Maryland. He was also a member of The Scottish Rite Valley of Cumberland and The Kazim Temple of Richmond. John was an avid hunter, fisherman, shooter, and conservationist. He was a life member of the American Trap Shooting Association, a member of The Single Action Shooting (SASS), a former member of The International Brotherhood of Single Action Revolvers (ISBAR), a member of Isaac Walton League, as well as American Legion Post 03 and VFW Post 1264, and an endowment life member of the NRA. He organized the Big Lick Long Rifles who are still active and shoot at a Floyd, Virginia range. His muzzle-loading rifles that he designed from a block of wood can attest to his woodworking skills. John and Lois loved fishing from their off-shore boat, the “Osie Ain” in the Chesapeake Bay area. After selling the big boat, they downsized to smaller fishing boats and spent many happy weekends with his dedicated fishing partner, Jack Reynolds, from Richmond. His God-given talent, working with wood, will be his legacy at College Lutheran Church in Salem where he has been a long time member. His unique portable altar stands in the church chapel along with his creative candle sticks, crosses, easels, and church directional signs. In his younger days, he loved working on old vehicles. His church membership was held at First Christian Church in Salem.Preceding him in death were his parents, Percy Edward and Roxie Ruth Crawford Baker; wife, Carolyn Slough Baker; and siblings, Robert, Sue, Nancy, Ceil, infant sister Sylvia Fay, Mary, James, Tom, and Curley.His surviving family includes his twin sister, Colleen Baker Sarver and husband, Virgil; mother-in-law, Margaret Allen; daughter, Belinda Baker Hale and husband, Donnie; granddaughter, Morgan; several nieces and nephews; special church friend, Lewis Armistead, who took Clarence to Salem football games and church; and his dancing dog, Napoleon.The family extends special thanks to the Virginia Veterans Care Center 1 East staff for his care.A period of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, in the John M.
