Virginian-Pilot editorial: For Suffolk, Johnson, Ward, Milteer and Fawcett - Virginian-Pilot

Monday, October 31, 2016

James Faulk, chairman of the city’s Economic Development Authority; Vanessa Harris, 61, a funeral home and music production company owner and middle school teacher; and LaTroy Brinkley, who owns a downtown business.Any of them — and especially Faulk — would bring a new and welcome perspective to City Council. Unfortunately, they cannot bring Milteer’s long and invaluable experience, and the presence of three challengers in the race is likely to seal Milteer’s re-election.Finally, the Sleepy Hole Borough will feature two of the three candidates from the election four years ago. That election elevated Roger Fawcett to City Council. Four years ago, this page preferred Raymond Batton, who is also running again. In the intervening four years, Fawcett, a businessman who works with the Virginia State Police, has proven an able representative on City Council, responsive to constituents and responsible in his choices.Batton’s platform suffers by comparison, as a challenger’s tends to do. Even so, he has been unable to muster the case that Fawcett needs replacement. He doesn’t. Fawcett would be the better representative for Sleepy Hole.
