Monday, June 19, 2017Van Werven to speak at Lynden, GreenwoodWHATCOM — Lynden VFW Post 9301 and its auxiliary, local officials, boy scouts and school bands will again present Memorial Day ceremonies at two cemeteries on Monday, May 29.The Lynden Cemetery service will be at 10 a.m., Greenwood Cemetery’s on East Wiser Lake Road at 1:30 p.m. State Rep. Luanne Van Werven will be the main speaker at both.In the morning Boy Scout Troop 4028 and Cub Scout Pack 4032 members will have placed American flags on bronze medallions at gravesites in Lynden of more than 250 veterans interred including over 70 from the Civil War.American flags will line the main driveways and also along Front Street, put up at dawn and then retired at dusk.Lynden will have these participants: the Lynden Middle School Band, directed by Jarid Norman; Lonnie Rose, VFW post commander; Randall Marston, post chaplain; scouts posting colors for the national anthem; Eagle Scout candidate Kyle Glenn leading the pledge of allegiance. Monday, June 19, 2017El Dorado, AR; three brothers, Joseph Preston (Pat) Abrams, Jr. of Ware Shoals, John Thomas Abrams, Sr. of Laurens, and James (Frankie) Abrams of Spartanburg; his sister-in-law, Betty Abrams of Greenwood; and two grandchildren, Renee (Christopher) Roberson and Jessica Langley, both of El Dorado AR. He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Abrams.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017 at Ware Shoals First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Wayne Wicker, Rev. John T. Abrams, Jr., and Rev. George Leagans officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.The family is at the home and will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Parker-White Funeral Home. Monday, June 19, 2017New Orleans police were investigating the death of man whose body was found in the grass near a Lakeview cemetery Friday morning (June 9).The man's body was found near an entrance drive to Greenwood Cemetery and First Baptist Church New Orleans (map). NOPD spokesman Juan Barnes said the man had been shot, but said the death was unclassified. He declined to say if foul play was suspected.Officers as of 8:30 a.m. were blocking the entrance drive and people dropping children off at the church for daycare were being diverted. Traffic on Canal Boulevard was not affected by investigation, as of 8:30 a.m.A Greenwood Cemetery employee discovered the man's body about 7 a.m. while making her routine morning rounds of the grounds, said Pat McMahon, 63, an ambassador for Greenwood Funeral Home.McMahon said the employee saw the man's body and honked her horn, thinking he was sleeping. When she realized he wasn't moving, she called authorities. Saturday, June 10, 2017McDougald Funeral Home in the 2200 block of North Main Street in Anderson. After the funeral, the deputy will be laid to rest in Oakbrook Memorial Park, a cemetery at 3007 U.S. 25 in the Greenwood County community of Hodges. The 39-mile funeral procession will start in Anderson and go toward Belton and Honea Path as it winds its way to Greenwood County. Members of the public are encouraged to line the procession roadways as a show of respect to Hodges, McBride said.Hodges was posthumously promoted to the rank of master deputy, officials said Monday.Gov. Henry McMaster, who spoke in Anderson on Monday, ordered that flags across the state be lowered to half-staff from sunup to sundown Tuesday in honor of Hodges."We often don't realize the risk that those who go into law enforcement ... subject themselves to," McMaster said.Hodges was a uniform patrol officer. Besides those duties, he recently joined the Sheriff's Office's eight-member marine patrol unit. The unit patrols Lake Hartwell, Broadway Lake and parts of Lake Russell.Hodges was doing a marine patrol training exercise Thursday with other Anderson County deputies and representatives of the Army Corps of Engineers when he was mortally wounded.He and two other people were ejected from a boat at Singing Pines Recreation Area in Starr.Flowers, art, badges, notes, teddy bears and condolences from friends, family, and people thanking Devin Hodges, Anderson County Sheriff's Office deputy, before the wake on Monday night at the Civic Center of Anderson.
