The State of California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau has revoked troubled Simpson Family Mortuary in Inglewood after 35 years of funeral and cremation service, effective May 2015.The discovery which can be found on the state Department of Consumer Affairs website has not deterred Simpson Family Mortuary from continuing business as the company is referring potential customers to its Long Beach location through radio advertisements.Simpson Mortuary also is licensed in Los Angeles and San Bernardino. The mortuary, under the direction of Curtis Simpson Sr., Derrick Sherrod King and Sonya Latrese Simpson has been levied with numerous complaints from the State Attorney General and most recently in 2013 when the mortuary conducted a service with the wrong remains in the casket. In that case, Simpson Family Mortuary was cited with misrepresentation or fraud, gross negligence, gross incompetence or unprofessional conduct. Calls to Simpson Family Mortuary are forwarded to its Long Beach location.A woman answered the phone and explained that the Inglewood location was under renovation and will be...

Giving the grieving a break: Online disclosure of funeral costs in South Bay helps avoid gouging - The Daily Breeze

Monday, March 27, 2017

The choice was easy for John Kirk, president of White & Day, which today runs four mortuaries in Torrance, Redondo Beach, Gardena and Inglewood.“We’ve put our prices online for a very long time, since the beginning,” he said. “We just figured there’s no reason to frustrate people who are looking for information.”That may seem like a no-brainer, but nationwide, many — if not most — funeral homes refuse to disclose prices on their websites.A report last week from the Consumer Federation of America and the Funeral Consumers Alliance criticized “the industry’s intractable stance on price transparency,” adding, “it is past time for funeral homes to join the 21st century and post their prices on their websites as nearly every other retail service sector does voluntarily.”The two nonprofit groups called on the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which is set to revise its funeral rules next year, to require online cost posting.“Funerals are not elective activities — everybody dies,” the groups noted in a 2016 petition to the FTC. “Between now and 2019, consumers will likely spend at least $50 billion on funeral services.”A consumer winIn 1984, under President Ronald Reagan, the FTC issued new rules after investigations found many of the nation’s 22,000 funeral homes were gouging customers, adding hidde...

Mortuary Mix-Up Extends Families' Grief - NBC Southern California

Monday, January 23, 2017

An Inglewood mortuary admitted Monday it made a mistake and put a woman in the wrong casket.A spokesman made the admission several days after Evans Davidson, 73, complained that the woman in the casket at the viewing wasn’t his wife."I was pretty certain it wasn’t my wife – unless she did some awful changing," he said.Officials at Simpson’s Mortuary claimed it was Darlene Davidson, his wife of 51 years, but she looked different because she was embalmed."It wasn’t my wife and I knew it," Davidson said.A few days after the funeral, he received a call from the mortuary. An employee told him he might have been right after all because another family was now claiming a “body switch,” and his wife’s body was still at the mortuary."I didn’t know what to think," he said. "Why am I going to ID a body when my wife’s supposed to be buried already?"Davidson said workers at the mortuary told him they had a lady "jumping up and down saying this is not her mother."Dr. Reginald Black, a spokesman for Simp...
