Monday, May 01, 2017By Larry Altmanlaltman@scng.com @larryaltman on TwitterA 12-year-old Hermosa Beach boy was killed over the weekend when he hit a tree stump while skiing at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado, authorities said Monday.Logan Goodwin was injured Saturday afternoon while skiing in the trees near upper Springmeier, a beginner run on Peak 8, Summit County sheriff’s spokeswoman Erin Opsahl said.He was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Aurora. He died trying to protect his cattle and the lives of those with him from a Texas panhandle wildfire. He was 35.Sloan was born in Abilene, Texas on September 8, 1981 and grew up in Breckenridge, Texas. He graduated from Breckenridge High School with honors in 2000 and went on to attend Baylor University, graduating magna cum laude in 2004 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, double majoring in Finance and Entrepreneurship. In 2005, he went to work for ConocoPhillips in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where he had the opportunity to travel to many countries, including Canada, Costa Rica, Norway, Russia, Peru and Indonesia.He moved to Dallas, Texas in 2007 to work for Hunt Oil Company, during which time he met Liesl Austin. Attempts to revive him at the top of the lift were unsuccessful.In January, a skier pushed a snowboarder off an Aspen Highlands chairlift. Thomas Proesel, who was accused of first-degree assault in the case, was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
