Florida homebuilding legend Rutenberg dies at 89 - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Monday, April 03, 2017

Art was always leading and never following. A risk taker that made home building exciting and always led the competition."The company builds in a number of Southwest Florida communities, including Lakewood Ranch, The Concession, Palmer Ranch and Hi Hat Ranch."A true gentleman, and a visionary for his time," said Lee Wetherington, a longtime local home builder. "His homes set the Florida trend of master suite on one side and secondary bedrooms on the other. His computerized purchasing and franchise system was well ahead of its time. An icon, to say the least."Rutenberg was still involved in the company, although a son, Barry, is now its chairman. In a 2008 interview with the Herald-Tribune, Rutenberg recalled launching his building career at age 26 after leaving Chicago and a job selling appliances."I started by building three homes in Clearwater in 1953," he said. "They were about 1,000 square feet of living space and sold for $10,000 each. The lots cost $800. Those were simpler times. Today, building permits cost more than the price of those homes."A Rutenberg model in The Concession now lists for $1.1 million.Rutenberg merged his company with another in 1969 to form U.S. Home, which he led for a short time before leaving to work with other builders. He started Arthur Rutenberg Homes in 1980 and later decided to become a franchisor. He was named "Builder of the Year" by Professional Builder magazine in 1986.Survivors include his wife, Jane; daughters Sharon Rosenberg, Jan Morse and Julie Rutenberg; sons Steve and Barry; a brother, Daniel; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home of Clearwater is handling arrangements. — Real estate editor Harold contributed to this report, which includes information from the Tampa Bay Times.
