Monday, February 20, 2017Florence A. (Papallo) Sestito, 89, a lifetime resident of Darien passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 7. She was born in Meriden on Oct. 10, 1927 to the late Joseph and Rose Saverine Papallo.Mrs. Sestito was a graduate of Darien High School, Class of 1945. She was employed at the Shepard Insurance Agency in Stamford until raising her family. She will be remembered as a very caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her loving children, Joseph L. Sestito of Darien, Lawrence R. Sestito and his wife Susan of Darien and Catherine Lombardo and her husband Michael of Trumbull, as well as her grandchildren Dana and Michael Lombardo, Lindsay Miller and her husband Elliot and Lauren Sestito. Also surviving is her sister Jean Cosway of MO and several nieces and nephews.Besides her parents, Mrs. Sestito was predeceased by her husband Dominick V. Sestito and her sisters Evelyn Vitti and Louise Rondano.A Mass of Christian Burial was held St. Thomas More RC Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Sunday. Monday, February 20, 2017She enjoyed watching horror movies, much to her husband's chagrin.In addition to her husband, she is survived by her loving daughter, Rebecca Johnson and her husband, David, of Meriden; two cherished grandsons, Ryan and Evan; one brother, John Golias and his wife, Brenda, of FL; her mother-in-law, Lillian Duda, of Stratford; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved grandson, Sean William Johnson.Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 9:45 a.m. at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford and at 10:30 am at Holy Name of Jesus with a Mass of Christian Burial. She graduated from Meriden-Cleghorn High School in 1965 and furthered her education at the Le Mars Beauty College.On Dec. 30, 1968, Linda and James Siple were united in marriage at the Cherokee United Methodist Church. When Jim returned from the Vietnam War, the couple made their home in Le Mars.Linda worked as a cosmetologist at Gingham Girls in Sioux City. She would later join Jim and operate the Pantry Café in Le Mars. Along with owning the café, Linda opened The Right Match, a store that specialized in tennis equipment and clothing.After closing The Right Match, Linda took classes at Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City where she studied as a surgery technician. She began in the housekeeping department at Floyd Valley Hospital and later worked as a surgical technician’s assistant. Monday, December 12, 2016Kylie Curtis said in a telephone interview on Tuesday night.Curtis, a Meriden resident and 2002 Hartford High School graduate, described her father as a hardworking man who never quit. He would work long hours for Irving Oil during the day and then drive, sometimes hours, to umpire a baseball game or referee a football game.“It was something he prided himself on,” Curtis said.Throughout the years, Ammel umpired hundreds of legion, high school and Babe Ruth baseball games for Upper Valley teams.He even instilled in his own children a love for baseball and other sports. Curtis went on to play ice hockey and golf at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.His oldest daughter, Betsy, helped build the University of Vermont’s varsity women’s hockey program, while his son, Dan, played football at Bridgton Academy and Sacred Heart.She said her father very much enjoyed dressing up as Santa Claus on the Rotary Club of White River’s Polar Express train ride and for other community events.Ammel graduated from Hartford High School in the early 1970s and studied agriculture at Vermont Technical College in Randolph. He was a farmer for many years.He also enjoyed gardening, outdoor activities, camping and living off the land, his daughter said.“He was a loving father and husband that did everything for his family,” Curtis said.Ammel is survived by his parents, his wife, his three children, his five grandchildren and several other loved ones.
