Monday, January 16, 2017September 17, 1971. On November 18, 1972, he married Mary A. Ruff at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Rev. John L. Downs, officiating.Ronnie worked for Kimberly-Clark in New Milford, Connecticut for 23 years before moving back to Massena. After returning, he worked for St. Mary’s Church in Massena as the janitor and later in the produce department at P&C Foods until his retirement. He was a life member of the VFW and enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, motorcycling, and horseback riding. Ronnie also enjoyed going to the New York State Fair, watching deer on Barnhart Island, and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.Ronnie is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Chuck and Nicole Miner of Winthrop; and Yvonne Newcombe and her companion, Eric Aldridge of Massena; his grandchildren, Taylor, Ethan, Hunter, Carlee, Gunner, Alyssa, Rita, Kaitlyn, Sydney, Camryn, Jordyn, and Ryder; his sister, Charleen and Steve Hutchins of Helena, a niece and a nephew.In addition to his parents, Ronnie is predeceased by infant twin daughters, Karen and Karann and an infant sister, Yvonne Miner.As per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery, Massena with military honors.Memorial contributions may be made in his memory may be made to Massena Rescue Squad.Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where memories and condolences may be made online at www.donaldsonfh.com.
Monday, December 26, 2016Joe Cervino, a longtime baseball coach and athletic director at Teaneck High School, died Tuesday at Holy Name Hospital, according to NorthJersey.com. He was 93 years old.Cervino, who lived in New Milford, began his career at Teaneck in 1949 and spent his early years as the head football coach before switching to head the baseball program, which he led for 22 seasons. His coaching legacy included 384 wins and three sectional titles.The Haddon Heights native also spent more than two decades as the Teaneck athletic director and was the co-founder of the Bergen County baseball tournament, which began in 1959. To this day, the tournament's winning coach receives an award named in Cervino's honor.In his early years, Cervino went to Gettysburg College to play football and baseball, but had his collegiate career interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he served as a sergeant in the Army, took part in the invasion of Normandy and earned a Purple Heart. He eventually returned to Gettysburg before settling in New Milford.One of Cervino's sons, also named Joe, went on to become the head baseball coach at nearby Paramus and racked up 538 wins over 30 years before re...

Hittorff Jr. was a 1934 graduate of the school who went on to serve on the USS Oklahoma, where he was stationed on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked, according to a report in The Greater New Milford Spectrum newspaper.Hittorff was 25 years old when he was killed along with more than 400 other sailors on the vessel.Seven days after the attack, Hittorff's family was notified that he was lost in action.He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the American Defense Medal, according to his obituary.Another Connecticut newspaper — the Litchfield County Times — published an article written by a family member which described how Hittorff's remains were identified and returned home.Hittorff, who was born in Kingston, New Jersey, managed his high school football team during his senior year at Collingswood High and also attained the rank of Eagle Scout.A funeral service is planned for June 18 in Kent, Connecticut.Matt Gray may be reached at mgray@njadvancemedia.com.
