Monday, June 19, 2017Philip Louis Rotondo died Saturday, June 10, 2017. Phil was born in Simsbury and lived in Simsbury and Avon for most of his life. He attended Avon Old Farms on a scholarship and started the baseball team there. After Avon Old Farms, he went on to study civil engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and eventually earned a Masters and PhD in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He spent two years in the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, and told a story about being on watch one night and nearly getting knocked overboard by a flying fish. Phil worked for nearly four decades at Combustion Engineering where he earned a reputation as the guy who could solve any problem. He also launched entrepreneurial ventures for which he earned several patents.Long time Avon residents may remember the Rotondo Pizza House which Phil ran with his parents. He was in charge of making the pizzas and recently calculated that he had made over 250,000 pizzas in his lifetime. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Christopher, Aaron, Elise, Jamie and Colleen Oakes and Ian and Kira Melville.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 18 at 10 am directly at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Dr., Fairfield, CT 06824. Monday, March 27, 2017James A. Frost, recently of Bloomfield, formerly of Simsbury, died March 16, 2017.He was born on May 15, 1918 in Manchester, England and was the son of Rev. Harry A. Frost and Janet Wilson Frost. He received a B.A. from Columbia College and PhD. (Amer. History) from Columbia University. Dr. Frost served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII becoming a Statistical Control Officer with the rank of Major. Following military service, Dr. Frost served as a Professor of American History and then Academic Dean at Oneonta State College in Oneonta, N.Y. At the same time, he served in the Air Force Reserves for 20 years rising to Lieutenant Colonel. He also authored or co-authored seven books and contributed articles to numerous publications and encyclopedias, mostly on the history of New York State. Dr. Frost’s scholarship was recognized when he was made an Honorary Fellow of the New York State Historical Association. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 10:15 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Ridgefield followed by entombment in the Columbarium at St. Mary Cemetery in Ridgefield. Auxiliary Co-Chairwomen Gail Korten and Patty Crawford, Auxiliary Treasurer Judy Sturgis and Second Chance Shop Treasurer Betsy Hurley, Second Chance Shop co-chairwomen Joanne Kenney and Maddie Gilkey and past Auxiliary co-chairwomen Deb Gice and Linda Swearingen presented the check to Rodriguez at the Hop Meadow Country Club event.The Auxiliary's primary source of revenue is the Second Chance Shop, a high end thrift store located in the center of Simsbury. The store underwent a make-over in 2010 and since then has morphed into a boutique style shopping experience selling in season women's, men's and children's clothing size infants to extra-large, and accessories including hand bags, scarves and neckties, jewelry, shoes, belts and hats.
