Toscano, who died Friday while responding to a house fire, and she started to smile, and Toscano’s relatives, friends, and fellow firefighters started to laugh. Also survived by his loving sister Joannne Gorbey and her husband Jimmy of Vermont, his dear cousin Jean Caloggero of Watertown, his uncle Lou Saia of Florida, and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Freddy graduated from Newton High School in 1961 where he was a three-sport varsity athlete. In recognition of his athletic skills and personal character he received the Dickinson Award at graduation, and in 2014 he was inducted into the NHS Hall of Fame. Fred’s commitment to young people and his appreciation for the value of sports were evident in the time he gave to coaching and managing youth sports programs. Through sheer hard work and personal sacrifice, Fred established Newton’s Pop Warner Program more than 50 years ago fulfilling his vision of providing Newton’s youth the opportunity to play football in a Pop Warner Program. Funeral from the Magni Funeral Home, 365 Watertown St, Rt. 16, Newton, Saturday, March 11, at 9:00am. His wife, Michelle and an infant son, Jonathan David Franker preceded him in death.Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville. Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
