He was 96.His death was confirmed this week by his son John.As an imposing, 6-foot-4 United States attorney for New Jersey, Mr. Lacey smashed the corrupt Democratic machines in Essex and Hudson Counties.He successfully prosecuted Mayors Hugh J. Addonizio of Newark and Thomas J. Whelan of Jersey City; John V. Kenny, the Hudson County party boss; and Mafia leaders with whom local politicians, power brokers and officials conspired to plunder the public coffers.Within four years, Mr. Lacey and his successor, Herbert J. Stern, won the convictions of three-dozen government officials after what Mr. Lacey called “the most intensive investigation ever conducted by the federal government in New Jersey” had uncovered graft “unmatched in anything in my experience.”“Everything has a price on it,” he said at the time.In the mid-1950s, as an assistant prosecutor, Mr. Lacey prosecuted Albert Anastasia, the feared former head of Murder Inc., the Brooklyn-based hitmen for hire, for income-tax evasion. She was the wife for 40 years of the late David I. Lee, who died in 1986.She was born and raised in Marlborough, the daughter of the late William J. and Theresa (Marinelli) Shanahan, and was a 1942 graduate of St. Michael’s Catholic High School in Hudson.Ellen was a chef for Nashoba Regional High School for 38 years, retiring in 2000, and previously worked at LaPointe Machine Tool Co. in Hudson for several years.She enjoyed music, dancing, swimming, cooking, and was an avid reader. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed a special bond with her grandchildren.She leaves three daughters, Mary J. Nichols and her husband Jeffrey of Bolton, Virginia A.
