He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Dovie Jackson; his parents, Floyd and Easter Jackson; and, brother, Raymond Jackson; brothers-in-law, Nelson Starkey and Steve Carroll. Survivors include his daughter, Kim Jackson; son, Jason Jackson and wife, Kelley; granddaughter, Landrey Kyle “Chi Chi” Jackson; brothers, Robert Jackson (Suzanne), Elvin Jackson (Doris), Billy Jackson (Gail); sisters, Anne Starkey, Tanna Bailes (Earl), Shelaine Dunn (Toby), Christy Carroll, Bobbie Sherrill (Matthew). Ralph was a member and former deacon at First Baptist Church, Killen, Alabama. He honorably served his country during the Vietnam War as an air policeman in the United States Air Force. He graduated from Athens State University with a degree in Criminal Justice and Behavioral Science and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He furthered his education and specialized training in fire protective services and as a licensed emergency medical technician. He was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority after 35 years of service, serving as Chief of Security at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant for the majority of his tenure. Though very educated and skilled for his career in law enforcement, his priority in life was always his family. He married the love of his life, Dovie, after his return from Vietnam, adored his two children and enjoyed coaching softball, baseball and basketball – any activity involving his children. "We can't comprehend how God works in mysterious ways, but I know it's true."On Oct. 30, 2015, Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the home at 2296 Valley Road in Holley by the Sea after receiving a call from a person who said he had shot someone. According to the arrest report, when deputies arrived they found 60-year-old John Marshall Fitzgerald with blood on his clothing on the front porch of the home kneeling over Starkey, who was lying on his back.Starkey was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital by helicopter. Fitzgerald said, "Oh my god! I shot him! I shot him!", the report said. When deputies asked where Starkey was shot, Fitzgerald replied "right here on the porch." Monday, December 19, 2016Rivers Starkey A University of Alabama student who fought to live for more than a year after being shot during a Florida vacation has now died.Rivers Starkey, 23, died Thursday afternoon at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. He had been moved to the hospital in his hometown after first being treated at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and then the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which specializes in spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation.He was the grandson of the late former Alabama Rep. Nelson Starkey, and the son of Jeanna and Trey Starkey. "We appreciate all the prayers and support from so many people during this time,'' Trey Starkey told AL.com Thursday night. Starkey and Ora Jean (Thomas) Starkey.He enjoyed computers and spending time with his brother. Ed graduated from Carrollton High School. He then served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years.He is survived by his brother, Samuel Starkey of Lisbon; two sisters, Cindy Pitts of Sebring and Dorene Reynolds of Leetonia; and many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.Maple Cotton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
