Monday, June 19, 2017EASTMAN — Charles “Chuck” F. Caya, 83, of Eastman passed away Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing, Iowa, following a brief illness.He was born Aug. 30, 1933, in Eastman, the son of Mitchel and Rose (Mickel) Caya. Chuck served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Janice Oppriecht June 2, 1956, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman. Chuck worked as a crane operator for Operating Engineers Local 139, throughout the State of Wisconsin. He was recently recognized as a 60 year member of the Eastman American Legion. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed his many big game hunting trips out west.He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice Caya; his brothers, George (Diane) of Eastman and Thomas (Sharon) of Seneca; his sisters, Margaret (Charles) Schmidt of Orlando, Fla., and Grace McDaneld of Plattsmouth, Neb.; along with numerous nieces and nephews. A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he graduated from the Eastman School of Music, earning the honor of the Performer's Certificate in saxophone as well as a B.M. in Music Education, received an M.A. in clarinet from Connecticut College, and pursued postgraduate study in woodwinds at Eastman.Professor Vadala, Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone Professor, is a UM Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland. In 1961 Daniel graduated from the University of Rochester’s Eastman Dental Dispensary with a certificate in orthodontics. Until the time of his death, he was a practicing orthodontist in Denton, MD, where he owned his own office. The joy of his life was the children he treated.He was a past member of the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, Maryland State Dental Society and the Southern Maryland Dental Society. He was a member of the International Club of Annapolis and the Harbor Hills Yacht Club, where he served as Fleet Captain for a number of years. He was an avid boater and lover of the sea, fisherman, gardener, reader and lover of Shakespeare.Dr. Placido was preceded in death by his brothers, Francis and Anthony and his sisters, Rose, Teresa, Emily and Jane.He is survived by his wife Joan; his children, John D. and Susan D.
