Funeral service will be held Friday for 18-year-old Jordan Barber, who was shot dead trying to break up a brawl between rival groups inside a Harlem housing complex. Barber was murdered at the Polo Ground Houses June 29 as he intervened in a confrontation between Fast Money, the hip hop group he was a part of, and another group. There have been no arrests. He was one of the first African-Americans to run for president.Certainly Mr. O’Cummings must have represented hope and possibility to the boys who had gathered around him that day.Dedicated to economic and political empowerment for blacks, Mr. O’Cummings founded the National Civil Rights Party in 1963 to foster black enterprise and to appeal to liberal whites. He said at the time that the organization had 450 members, with branches in Chicago, Cleveland and Philadelphia. The party designated him its presidential nominee days before he decided to run as a Democrat.It will never be known where Mr. O’Cummings’s ambitious political aspirations might have taken him. He was saluted and received honors from the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, and was the recipient of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2008.He is survived by his wife, Karen (Aiki) Kelley; his daughters, Jessica and Cira; his grandchildren, Cherlonda, Blossom and Joshua; a great-grandson, Sky; and a gray cat, Dolce. An older sister, Sinah E. Kelley, a chemist, predeceased him. According to the family, he will be cremated by Benta Funeral Home and a memorial service is pending.
