Saturday, June 10, 2017Ottilo Frances Krause Buchholtz, 93, of Gonzales, was born April 28, 1924 in Gonzales to Otto Krause and Helena Gertrude DeJardo Krause. Frances married Herman Fred “BeBe” Buchholtz on August 13, 1943 in Gonzales. She was a member of the Gonzales First Lutheran Church and had served as vice-president of the Travis State School.Frances grew up in Gonzales and frequently moved with her family wherever her father could find work as a share cropper. Hardships flourished in those early days of her youth, the great depression weighed heavily on the backs of the entire nation, farmers had to work extra hard to scratch out a living as waves of dust choked their crops. Certainly, these were trying times, but for Frances these were times that built character, unwavering determination and a tremendous appreciation for family. Frances worked for the Gonzales Cotton Mill until it closed down and then she traveled every work day to New Braunfels where she worked at the New Braunfels Cotton Mill. She owned and operated Adorable Florist, a flower shop in Gonzales for 10 years before going to work with he...
Tuesday, April 18, 2017Valier. The words cast in relief upon the bell’s copper sides identify its historic origin.“Catholic Colony Established 1913 By John P. Carroll, Bishop of Helena,” the raised lettering reads. “Donated By Rt. Rev. Victor Day, V.G.”Within this somewhat cryptic dedication lies the origins of a church, a community and the early history of Catholicism in central Montana. Many may be familiar with John Patrick Carroll, the second bishop of the Diocese of Helena. Carroll is remembered today as the driving force behind construction of the Cathedral of St. Helena and foundation of the first Catholic college in Montana, an institution which now bears his name; Carroll College.Fewer people are aware of the role played by the Right Rev. Victor Day, vicar general of the Diocese of Helena for more than 30 years. In 1912, Monsignor Day traveled from Montana to his native Belgium to organize the immigration of 13 families making their way from the Low Countries of Western Europe to establish a new Catholic colony roughly nine miles east of Valier.Despite few English language skills, rocky soils, little knowledge of Montana’s climate and growing conditions and an early succession of failed crops, the Belgian and Dutch families who settled below what later came to be known as “Belgian Hill” survived and ultimately prospered. The same cannot be said of the church they built by faith and determination, one year before the outbreak of World War I. .oembed-asset-link { border-bottom: 1px solid #e1e1e1; } .oembed-link-anchor { display: block; clear: both; } p.oembed-link-desc { font-size: 100%; color: #666; font-weight: normal; margin: 0 14px 14px 14px; font-family: 'Futura Today Light'; text-align: left; line-height: 120%; }For 50 years, the bell atop Sacred Heart Church (now more commonly known as the “Old Belgian Church”) rang to celebrate the joy of weddings, tolled to mourn the passing of loved ones, and called the faithful to gather for Sunday Mass.Beginning in the 1950s, attendance at the Old Belgian Church began to dec...
