'Anybody's kid': Mourners remember Fort Worth brothers who were electrocuted - Fort Worth Star Telegram

Monday, April 03, 2017

Lopez said. “Because around here, it could have been.”Alex Lopez, 12, and his brother, Isaiah, 11, were electrocuted Wednesday evening while playing with friends at Oakland Lake Park. They were exploring a wooded area, family said, when Alex stepped in a puddle that was electrified by nearby downed power lines. Isaiah tried to save him but was shocked by his brother’s touch.Their memorial Friday night was a chance for more than 100 friends and family to remember the boys — the crowd released dozens of red and blue balloons and lit candles. But it was also an opportunity for the mourners to see up close where the accident happened, where the Lopez brothers played often with neighborhood kids. The spot was off a trail about 20 yards into a thicket of trees and brush just beyond a ballfield at the park. It was marked off with caution tape Friday, but many who attended the memorial stepped through the barrier to pay their respects. They set up a small wooden cross and tied to it a bundle of shiny balloons. They scattered rose petals and prayed and cried. One little girl, Abby, left a hand-written note, complete with crosses drawn in crayon.“I hope you guys are in heaven now!” her note said. “I will see you guys later up there. Just be waiting for me don’t go anywhere. Go find my dog Lulu.

Lincoln Village and July 4th - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Monday, July 04, 2016

The day was planned with the most fun activities from sunup to sundown. The morning started with the decorated bike parade from Bartlett Avenue School up Newberry Blvd to Lake Park. I would enter my bike in the bike decorating contest and pray to place so I could win bragging rights and a blue ribbon that I would wear around my neck for the entire day. I would enter the three-legged-man race and the wheelbarrow race with one of the kids from the neighborhood. I’d try my best at the balloon toss during which, no matter how well I did, I would always end up soaked. I would eat vanilla ice cream with a wooden spoon out of a paper cup handed to me by a volunteer Lake Park lady. We would cheer on our brave neighbors and classmates whose mothers entered them into the annual 4th of July Lake Park Talent Show. We were surprised and amazed to see Carl Zimmerman, Albert the Alley Cat and Mayor Maier all together in Lake Park, the park we called ours. The memories of the 4th of Julys of the past bring back such clear and specific never to be forgotten images.Tomorrow morning, I will be back in Lake Park. I will watch the decorated bikes make their way up Newberry Boulevard. I will watch the races and smile with deep recognition when I see a kid soaked from the balloon toss. I will eat vanilla ice cream with a wooden spoon. I am now the one hosting the talent show, as we continue that Milwaukee Lake Park tradition. If you’re looking for something to do tomorrow morning, something that honors our neighborhoods, city and country, join me tomorrow morning around 9:00am in Lake Park when the decorated bikes will parade their way up Newberry Boul...
