Saturday, June 10, 2017A dispute over payment led to a deceased Vietnam War veteran’s body being placed on a gurney — not in a coffin — during his visitation at a funeral home in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, according to pictures posted by his family members.George Luther Taylor died on May 8. The Army veteran was 71, according to his obituary.Taylor’s family told WTVC that there was a problem with his life insurance payment and the funeral home refused to put his body in a coffin. Rather, he was placed on a gurney and partially covered with an American flag with an towel under his head, according to a photo posted on Facebook. Taylor’s son James told WTVC that he felt it was a disgrace.The funeral home said they did what the family asked. Monday, March 06, 2017Carman attended Fitzhugh Lee School grades one through eight, and graduated from Campbell High School in 1961. He attended South Georgia Junior College and Oglethorpe University. He was an active member of Smyrna First United Methodist Church. He was truly devoted to Smyrna’s schools, especially King Springs Elementary, Griffin Middle School and Campbell High School. He served as an officer in the Campbell Booster Club and was always present at school events. Carman enjoyed traveling to the National Parks, bird watching, and photography. He and his wife, Judy, traveled to many of the parks, the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Germany and Grand Cayman Island. His favorite joy was being with family and friends. For many years, you could always find him at Howard’s Deli around noon. Carman was known to all of us who knew him as kind, caring, generous, loving, patriotic, liberal, and happiest with his grandchildren. Visitation at Carmichael Funeral Home will be on Monday, March 6, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11 am Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Smyrna First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Lyle and Alan Nicely officiating. Monday, March 06, 2017Eloise Crowe Morris, 92, of Fort Oglethorpe, known to her family as “Nanny,” passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017 in Trenton, Florida.Born on March 7, 1926, to the late Forrest and Edna Crowe, she enjoyed her early childhood days in the Rome, Georgia community, later attending nearby Berry School where she met the love of her life, the late Joseph Ray Morris. They then moved to Chattanooga.She was a member of the Fort Oglethorpe, First Baptist Church, the Gleaners Sunday School Class, and Keenagers. She was a beautician by trade, having her salon in the family home for many years. She later established her business at a local Chattanooga retirement center. Monday, January 23, 2017Nita Maria Hart, 59, of Chattanooga, died on December 28, 2016. She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga/North Georgia area and a graduate of Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School.Maria was born on Feb. 4, 1957, in Kansas City, Mo. On the occasion of her birth, her mother wrote in her journal, “Maria, so small and so sick, I pray dear Lord, please let me see my beautiful little girl live, so that I may share my love with her.” Maria did live and showed the world her stubbornness would prevail. Maria found success, friends, and family. She cherished her friendships with Betty, Barbara, and her cousin Judy. Maria found an enriched life with her husband of 40 years and completeness with the birth of their son. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and an endless source of joy. Maria enjoyed the rewards of an accomplished 30 year career and the benefits of hard work. Her compassion and generosity touched many lives. Although she grew up in Chattanooga, she had been a resident of Georgia for most of her life, having lived in Rossville and Fort Oglethorpe prior to moving to Ringgold.Miss Mamie, as she was known, was the oldest member of Community Baptist Church in Rock Spring, Georgia. She was the matriarch and prayer warrior and greatly loved by the members. She and her husband, Milton, were founding members of Memorial Baptist Tabernacle where she taught the ladies Bible class for 46 years.
