Monday, January 02, 2017Brown, learned that the 13-year-old dog had cancer.Sutter, affectionately known as California’s “first dog,” was a fixture around the Capitol, often seen in Brown’s office and at public events. The Pembroke Welsh corgi was credited with softening the Governor’s dour, somber image, and he made it his business to befriend Democrat and Republican alike.Sutter was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer in October. During emergency surgery, veterinarians found several masses in the dog’s intestines, lymph nodes and liver. They were unable to remove them all, and broke the news to the Browns and Sutter’s fans that there was no hope for the little dog.The Browns made the decision to allow Sutter to live out the remainder of his days on his own terms.Sutter spent about 10 days in the hospital until he was strong enough to return home to be with his family, including his sister, Lucy, who will now assume the role of first dog.His condition improved enough to allow him to resume some of his duties. His appetite returned and he even joined Brown at the voting booth on election day. He also enjoyed Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In recent days, however, Sutter began a steady decline and on Friday, the Browns made the tough decision to end his suffering. The Browns were at his side as he drew ...
