Lynden Middle School with Jack Louws.Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the cemetery courtesy of Whatcom Transit Authority.At Greenwood, the Meridian Middle School Band will be involved under the direction of Sandy Rogers. Some of the participants repeat from Lynden’s service.Historian Andrew Kaiser will speak of his research on the Greenwood Cemetery and the Greenwood community.After a 21-gun salute, echo taps will be played by Meridian seventh grade lead trumpeter Michael Bender and Louws.The Lynden VFW post is also partnering with the Lynden Tractor Supply store, 1898 Front St., to host a Salute Our Troops event on Saturday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expect a barbecue, kids’ activities and displays.• With over 1,700 veterans’ flags flying on the grounds, Greenacres Memorial Park is always a highly colorful and patriotic scene on Memorial Day at the corner of Axton and Northwest roads. Activities go from noon to 3 p.m. Designated parking is on the north side.The Mount Baker Toppers men’s chorus is one musical participant this year, starting at noon. Another performer is country music artist Aaron Crawford.The main remembrance ceremony is at 2 p.m., with wreaths laid for each of the U.S. military branches. Col. Wes Weston is the master of ceremonies, and U.S. Navy Chief Don Thompson is the keynote speaker.Also there will be a flag delivery by a Department of Homeland Security helicopter, the unveiling of a new World War I memorial and a dove release. Free hot dogs and refreshments are provided by Hemplers, Franz and The Woods Coffee. Expect kids’ activities and crafts. Feel free to bring your own chair.

(the late Kenneth, Sr.) Slusher of Lake Milton, Ohio, Dwayne I. “Buddy” (Connie) Ruby of Kingston, Ohio and Nevada “Liz” (the Robert K. Sr.) Chalfant of Youngstown, Ohio; siblings, Ethel Ford, Hannah McKnight, Margaret Cornelius, Elise Gates, Sally Hess and Joe Bollman; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.Besides her parents Nevada was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William D Ruby; siblings, Ruth Tedrow, Paul Bollman, Dolly DuVall, Maryann Weaver, David Bollman; two grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.While Nevada had a hard life her family said that she was the most kind and loving mother anyone could ever have, that she made sure all of her grandchildren had a blanket made by her own hand, that her door was always open and no matter how little she had nobody was ever turned away because she would make a place for them so they felt welcome. Martin Gray and Melinda Martin Pritchett.Ray was a member of First Baptist Church of Niota, as well as a member of BPOE Lodge 1927 and VFW Post 5146. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Meridian Sun Lodge 50 F&AM. He was associated with TSSAA as a football and basketball official for 22 years. He served with the Tennessee Highway Patrol for 33 years, retiring as a captain, and served in the Tennessee National Guard for eight years. He graduated from Sweetwater High School, where he was an outstanding football and basketball player.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Jackson Whitlock of Athens; two granddaughters, Laura Kate Whitlock of Nashville, and Emily Ann Whitlock of Chattanooga; one step-grandson, Michael Altstatt of Athens; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Dorr Whitlock of Athens; one son-in-law, Bob Altstatt of Athens; one sister, Sharon Whitlock Young of Athens; one stepsister, Marilyn Atchley of Riceville; one brother-in-law, Sam Jones of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews, the Morning Pointe community and many special friends.A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, in the chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services with Pastor Cullen Conner officiating.
