Major farewell planned for Allen County Sheriff's late Sgt. Joseph Cox - News Sentinel

Monday, March 06, 2017

Cox off duty for the final time, Gladieux said. The procession then will drive back east for Cox's burial in Concordia Cemetery Gardens on Lake Avenue. Cox, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, will be buried with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute.Gladieux encouraged the public to come out to watch the procession and to show support for Cox's family and sheriff's personnel. Cox is survived by his wife, Diana, six children and other family, including 13 grandchildren, his obituary said. The funeral procession route will be announced once it is finalized, Gladieux said.Noting he and Cox served together previously on the sheriff's department SWAT team, Gladieux said he knew Cox well.Cox's served in the confinement division, communications/dispatch center, and the civil, warrants and patrol divisions. Cox, who was promoted to sergeant in 2015, also was a former K-9 officer and a former member of the department's Honor Guard and SWAT team. When Cox received an assignment, he took it to the end and always gave 110 percent in everything he did, Gladieux said. Cox was devoted to his family and very dedicated to his church, Blackhawk Ministries, and to assisting Youth for Christ's Juvenile Justice Ministry."He was very dedicated to this department, which means he was very dedicated to the community," Gladieux added.Cox had been in his office just last week, he said, where the sergeant voiced frustration about things not going well on a fatal accident investigation on which he was working. The conversation ended with Cox apologizing for bending Gladieux's ear, saying he was just "venting.""He gave me that grin and that wink he did so often," Gladieux recalled.Sheriff's department personnel are coping well with the loss, Gladieux said. Cox is the first sheriff's officer to die on duty in about 20 years. The department and Cox's family have been heartened by a huge outpouring of support, Gladieux said. Sheriff's officers' wives have organized providing food for Cox's family and for officers assisting with the guard duty and funeral events.Businesses also have offered to provide food, drinks or other needs, he said. Indiana Fraternal Order of Police officials have assisted with funeral and funeral procession planning.More I...
