Monday, June 19, 2017We want to continue the spirit and spread the word that age is simply a number.”“It will be another great day and will benefit a great cause,” affirms Andy Anderson, Executive Director at Brightview Avondell. “The county’s Senior Emergency Fund is essential for seniors in need.”“Senior Emergency Funds have made a difference in the quality of life and independence for many seniors in the county,” adds Karen Winkowski at the Office on Aging’s Senior Emergency Fund. “We are honored to be included in this special event.”Age groups for the 5K include children 12 and under, ages 13-59 and over 60. Cash prizes for the top three male and female runners will be awarded and medals will be given in each of the following categories: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+. A one kilometer walk will also be held for all ages.Brightview Avondell and Brightview Bel Air are Event sponsors for the 5K. Monday, June 19, 2017Philip Louis Rotondo died Saturday, June 10, 2017. Phil was born in Simsbury and lived in Simsbury and Avon for most of his life. He attended Avon Old Farms on a scholarship and started the baseball team there. After Avon Old Farms, he went on to study civil engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and eventually earned a Masters and PhD in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He spent two years in the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, and told a story about being on watch one night and nearly getting knocked overboard by a flying fish. Phil worked for nearly four decades at Combustion Engineering where he earned a reputation as the guy who could solve any problem. He also launched entrepreneurial ventures for which he earned several patents.Long time Avon residents may remember the Rotondo Pizza House which Phil ran with his parents. He was in charge of making the pizzas and recently calculated that he had made over 250,000 pizzas in his lifetime. She also worked for a time at the Buena Vista Cafe and she sold Avon products.She married Martin P. Emerine on April 10, 1965, they shared 52 years of marriage and many happy memories together, he survives.Karen enjoyed crocheting, gardening and making scrubbies. She was a loving and outgoing lady who dearly loved her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.Besides her beloved husband, Karen is survived by a son, Jeff Emerine, of Bristolville; a brother, Alan (Sharon) Miller of Akron; a sister, Joyce (John) Sines, of Rineyville, Kentuky and a granddaughter, Alexis McCrimmon of Bristolville. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Wendy Emerine; a brother, William Miller, Jr and a sister, Diane Currence.Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at the Carl W.
