Tuesday, April 18, 2017I will miss her tremendously, but she left me some great memories and I have those to sustain me."Three weeks ago, Turnquist was moved to JourneyCare Hospice facility in Barrington, where she died surrounded by her family.She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Spomer Larson and Gustaf Larson. She is survived by her sons, Dennis and Eric, both of Elgin, and brother Kenneth Larson of Aurora.Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, 256 E. Chicago St., Elgin, followed by light refreshments in the church's Fellowship Hall.Burial will be private at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin. She graduated from Barnard College in 1934 and married chemical engineer Ernest Nathan in 1937.Alan Nathan, 76, of Barrington, the oldest of their three children, said Monday from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he is skiing with his children and grandchildren, that his parents met in New York's Catskill Mountains, where hotels would arrange "the 1930s version of online dating."Joan Nathan wrote in a New York Times piece in 2003 that when her mother was about 50, her father's business took a downturn and Mrs. Nathan began teaching English at Barrington High School, where she became head of the English Department.In 2008, she received the Knowledge is Power Award for her work with Volunteers in Providence Schools, now called Inspiring Minds.RISD Museum Director John Smith said Monday that he ran into Mrs. Nathan and her daughter in the cafe on Sunday. "Pearl was her usual lively and lovely self," he said."It's astonishing when you encounter someone with her zest for life," he said. When he was born in 1959, Smith said Monday afternoon, Mrs. Nathan was a museum docent, "leading hundreds of schoolchildren through the gallery and getting them excited about art.""It was truly an honor to have known her," said cookbook author Ellen Brown, the founding food editor of USA Today and the Providence Journal's Smart Cooking columnist.Brown said that although cooking was not Mrs. Nathan's strong suit, she enjoyed great food and a cocktail. Monday, January 23, 2017She was a caring, generous woman, who left an impression on everyone she met.She was born Feb. 6, 1940, in her family home on the corner of Algonquin and Penny in Barrington Township, the daughter of Edward and Freda (Meier) Krabbe. She was a cook at Mendota Hospital, Sublette Fast Stop, and Mendota Lutheran Home. She also had worked at the Sublette Post Office. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Sublette, St. Anne Sodality, and Sublette 365 Committee, and was a Cub Scout den mother.Margaret married Bruce N. Bonnell on Aug. 21, 1960, in Lake Zurich. He preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 2005. Throughout her life, she was known for having both an open heart and open home, no matter the time of day. If you were ever in need, Margaret was the go-to; whether you were seeking a meal, place to sleep, favor, listening ear, or just a hug, she was always there with open arms.She loved to bake – cakes, cookies, brownies, breads, and anything else that is made with butter, sugar and love. Her crocheting and sewing abilities were second to none.
